General Site Info

History

This site was created in 1996 by Carel Lyn Ashzryl.
The goal of the site was to offer texture tiles for use as web page backgrounds and to keep the file sizes as small as possible to help conserve bandwidth.

Current and Future

All of the graphics in this site are still the sole creative effort of Carel.
With the addition of sidebars (borders), the bandwidth factor has gotten a bit bigger. With the new design, some of the original graphics were removed from the collection. And, all of the current graphics were created in much requested pale versions.

The site has also expanded to cover the most common request:
Solid color and/or subtle border backgrounds.
That idea expanded into what is now known as the Essentials by Carel Collection.
The new collection offers Bullets, Buttons, Bars, and Backgrounds all in the non-dithering internet palette.

You can access the over 50,000 graphics in that collection via the www.bycarel.com home page or from the links on the Table of Contents.

We'll be adding color palettes, web language tutorials, online design tools and links to resources on other sites as they are completed. We'll also be adding new graphics every month.

So, turn on some music, sit back, relax and start browsing the collections.
Whether you're looking for a 3D texture, desktop wallpaper or something to dress up your web page, desktop publishing or multimedia creation, you're sure to find something you like from the many selections at www.bycarel.com.

And, if you don't find something to your taste, be sure to contact us and suggest a category.

Downloading Instructions

Windows: click the right mouse button on the image.
Select 'Save As...', 'Save Image As...', or similar option from the pop-up menu.

Mac: click and hold down the right mouse on the image.
Select 'Save As...', 'Save Image As...', or similar option from the pop-up menu.

When clicking on a background image in the tiled view (the screen that previews images as they would appear on your web page), make sure you are not clicking on any other images that appear on the page. By default, most browsers I am familiar with will list the name in the save area box the same as the name appears on the site. Check the Image Selected area on the navigation screen to see if the name matches. (Note:the preceeding '_' (underscores) that appear in the text area name display are not actually in the image name.)

If these methods for downloading do not work with your browser, please consult your browser's manual or online documentation from the proper methods to download images from the web.

Navigation Buttons Explained

This area displays an example of the navigational panel that controls access to the backgrounds. Depending on your browser, the actual navigation panel may look exactly as displayed, or some images may have been replaced with drop down lists. Unless mentioned in the description, all features have the same functions.

Click on a button for a description of its function.

Image Back

The function of this button depends on whether you are viewing graphics via a selection from one of the menus or from a random or number (#) button request.

If you are browsing via the color or texture pages:
This button will take you back one image from within the images displayed on a menu page you have selected. If you are already at the first image on the page or have selected a page with only one image, this button will not function.

If you have entered an image number or selected the Random Generator:
This button will take you back one image from the one currently displayed. If you are on image number 1, this button will not function.

This button or drop-down list lets you set your option for the number of text colors you would like to display on the tiled preview pages.

This option may be turned to OFF, 9 colors (currently labeled 8 on the image only interface), and 216 colors.

The 216 color display gives text examples of all of the colors in the non-dithering internet palette (aka Netscape Palette).

Note: In the version without drop-down lists, placing the mouse over the image will show the next available option. To change to this option, you must click the image.

Note: In the text area version the image name does not actually have any of the '_' (underlines).

#

This button allows you to jump to a specific image number.

This feature can be useful for those who either do not choose to use the cookie function of the file folder or for those using the version of the site where the folder is not enabled. Just be sure to keep a pencil handy to write down the image numbers.

Note: only enter the image number and not the 'a' or the letter that follows the number.
