Backgrounds by Carel Help
General Site Info If the answer you need isn't in this document, be sure to contact us History This site was created in 1996 by Carel Lyn Ashzryl.
Current and Future All of the graphics in this site are still the sole creative effort of Carel.
The site has also expanded to cover the most common request:
You can access the over 50,000 graphics in that collection via the www.bycarel.com home page or from the links on the Table of Contents. We'll be adding color palettes, web language tutorials, online design tools and links to resources on other sites as they are completed. We'll also be adding new graphics every month. So, turn on some music, sit back, relax and start browsing the collections.
And, if you don't find something to your taste, be sure to contact us and suggest a category. Windows: click the right mouse button on the image.
Mac: click and hold down the right mouse on the image.
When clicking on a background image in the tiled view (the screen that previews images as they would appear on your web page), make sure you are not clicking on any other images that appear on the page. By default, most browsers I am familiar with will list the name in the save area box the same as the name appears on the site. Check the Image Selected area on the navigation screen to see if the name matches. (Note:the preceeding '_' (underscores) that appear in the text area name display are not actually in the image name.) If these methods for downloading do not work with your browser, please consult your browser's manual or online documentation from the proper methods to download images from the web. This area displays an example of the navigational panel that controls access to the backgrounds. Depending on your browser, the actual navigation panel may look exactly as displayed, or some images may have been replaced with drop down lists. Unless mentioned in the description, all features have the same functions. This button takes you back to the Backgrounds by Carel Home Page. Up to Button DisplayReturn to Top This button takes you to the Backgrounds by Carel Terms of Use (TOU). This is the end users license agreement and is required reading before making use of the graphics from this site. Up to Button DisplayReturn to Top This takes you to the Table of Contents for the entire www.bycarel.com website. Up to Button DisplayReturn to Top This takes you to a list of links to other sites of interest to web page and graphics designers. Up to Button DisplayReturn to Top This is the help button. It takes you to this page. Up to Button DisplayReturn to Top If you would like to browse the backgrounds arranged by most dominant color, select this option. When the color menu loads, select the page you would like to go to from the drop down list of the color of your choice. Up to Button DisplayReturn to Top This feature is only enabled in the version for Internet Explorer 4+ and Netscape Navigator/Communicator 3+. The file folder is your place to keep track of the images you like. When you see an image you'd like to download later, select the small '+' (plus sign) graphic on the tiled display pages (the pages that preview how a background will look on your web page). When you'd like to review the images in your folder, select the file folder button to go there. From the folder area, you can download, preview and delete the images you've selected. For additional help with the file folder, select the '?' (help) button from within the file folder area. Up to Button DisplayReturn to Top If you would like to browse the backgrounds arranged by texture categories, select this option. When the texture menu loads, select the page you would like to go to from the drop down list of the texture of your choice. Up to Button DisplayReturn to Top This is not the same as the Back button on your browser. If you have selected a page from either the texture or color menu, this button will take you back one page within the category or color you selected. Unless, of course you are already on the first page. Up to Button DisplayReturn to Top The function of this button depends on whether you are viewing graphics via a selection from one of the menus or from a random or number (#) button request. If you are browsing via the color or texture pages:
If you have entered an image number or selected the Random Generator:

Up to Button DisplayReturn to Top This is not the same as the Forward button on your browser. If you have selected a page from either the texture or color menu, this button will take you forward one page within the category or color you selected. Unless, of course you are already on the last page. Up to Button DisplayReturn to Top Selecting this button will display one of the graphics from the site at random. You may change other settings to redisplay this graphic with a different layout or 'brightness'. Or, move forward and back from this image using the Image Back and Image Forward buttons. To have additional graphics chosen at random, select either the Random Generator Button or the Image Selected button. Up to Button DisplayReturn to Top This takes you to the Color Tools area of our site. This area is still in the works and is currently empty, but we will have online web page design layout tools, color palettes and additional items of interest to Web page and Graphics designers. Up to Button DisplayReturn to Top This button or drop-down list lets you set your option for the number of text colors you would like to display on the tiled preview pages. This option may be turned to OFF, 9 colors (currently labeled 8 on the image only interface), and 216 colors. The 216 color display gives text examples of all of the colors in the non-dithering internet palette (aka Netscape Palette). Note: In the version without drop-down lists, placing the mouse over the image will show the next available option. To change to this option, you must click the image. Up to Button DisplayReturn to Top This button or drop-down list lets you set whether you would like the images to be displayed as tiles or sidebar border backgrounds (white backgrounds with texture only on a left side band). Note: In the version without drop-down lists, placing the mouse over the image will show the next available option. To change to this option, you must click the image. Up to Button DisplayReturn to Top This button or drop-down list lets you set whether you would like the images to be displayed in their standard or pale form. Note: In the version without drop-down lists, placing the mouse over the image will show the next available option. To change to this option, you must click the image. Up to Button DisplayReturn to Top This button or form text area shows you the name of the current image selected. If you have already selected to have an image displayed via the random generator, clicking on this button will display a new image chosen at random. Note: In the text area version the image name does not actually have any of the '_' (underlines). Up to Button DisplayReturn to Top This button allows you to jump to a specific image number. This feature can be useful for those who either do not choose to use the cookie function of the file folder or for those using the version of the site where the folder is not enabled. Just be sure to keep a pencil handy to write down the image numbers. Note: only enter the image number and not the 'a' or the letter that follows the number. Up to Button DisplayReturn to Top |
